Salk Mobile Lab Kit Training Workshop
DNA Activity Kits for Middle and High School Science Teachers!
Presenting curriculum kits based on the popular activities from the Salk Institute Mobile Science Lab for use by middle and high school science teachers in their classrooms. Teachers who participate in the below required workshop will be able to check out these kits to use in your own classrooms on your own schedule! THREE locations to serve you: kits are housed and maintained at Miramar Community College, Grossmont Community College and Mira Costa Community College – Oceanside.
Kits contain everything you need to do each activity for up to 200 students (more if you’re willing to clean and restock from supplies available upon request). Used kits can be returned “as is” – we’ll clean, refill, restock for you! Each kit includes access to matching curriculum materials including Powerpoint presentations, student worksheets, web-based activity ideas etc. as electronic files so you can modify as needed for your classes. Full support is available from Salk Education Outreach staff and our community of scientist volunteers – we’ll even come out to your classroom for presentation and logistical support if needed (schedules allowing).
Kit 1 – DNA Extraction: Uses wheat germ for a simple but powerful “first look” at actual DNA
Kit 2 – Gel Electrophoresis basics: Demonstrates the principals of DNA fingerprinting using food coloring. Kit equipment can also be used with actual DNA materials from Bio-Rad, Wards, Carolina Biological and more.
Workshop will take place at the Salk Institute for Biological Students from 8:30-12pm in the Parker Room.
