Summer Marine Mammal Intensive Learning Experiences (SMMILE)

CBOs, Family/Parent Organizations, Youth Organizing & Advisory Groups

SMMILE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that delivers place-based educational programs focused on marine mammal science and conservation. We promote environmental stewardship, foster passion for marine science, and empower the next generation of ocean ambassadors, through immersive, hands-on learning experiences. Our programs prioritize inclusivity for students from historically marginalized communities.

In Summer 2026 (July 13–17, 2026), we will offer a five-day Marine Bioacoustics course focused on marine mammals, hosted at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This immersive program will serve 20 high school students from San Diego who are eager to explore how scientists study sound in the ocean and how bioacoustics informs our understanding of marine mammal behavior and conservation. Students are eligible to apply if they are (1) Incoming high school juniors and seniors, (2) Currently living in San Diego County, (3) Priority will be given to students from historically marginalized communities (e.g., Hispanics/Latinos and American Indians/Alaska Natives). The deadline to apply is April 30, 2026. To apply, visit this link: https://smmiles.org/apply-now.
